It seems weird and unconnected but President Biden’s plan to promote gender equity includes a proposal to eliminate cash bail for suspects, despite skyrocketing violence. The reasoning appears to be that it causes too much harm to Black women and families. This is along with increased oversight of police departments by the federal government.
Cash bail needs to be eliminated to help combat gender and race disparities. That seems like a real stretch, but in line with the current narrative.
Shockingly this is at a time when, according to FBI data, the number of murders in the U.S. rose almost 30% in 2020. That is the largest single year increase since they began tracking the statistic. The overall violent crime rate, which includes assault, robbery, and rape, rose 5% in 2020.
Advocates for cash bail point to statistics that show those cities that eliminated cash bail show the likelihood of re-arrest before trial rose 37%. Without cash bail suspects were also more likely to miss their court date.
According to a letter from Biden and Harris, these are needed reforms since America has never fully lived up to the idea that every one of us is equal in dignity and deserves to be treated equally. They say this not only a moral imperative, but a strategic imperative.
